Conference History

The European Wireless (EW) conference series started in October 1998 under the roof of the European Microwave Week (EMW) in Amsterdam, Netherlands and continued in October 1999 in Munich, Germany. It turned out that the EMW was not an optimum frame owing to its character of a big exhibition accompanied by hardware focussed scientific conferences, controlled by the exhibition management. Accordingly, European Wireless became a stand-alone scientific conference and had its first stand-alone event in Dresden, Germany in September 2000 with VDE/ITG Germany as the main supporter that also owns the brand "European Wireless".

In parallel there existed another conference series named European Personal and Mobile Communications Conference (EPMCC) considered as a "sister" conference series. It was older in the number of events but had a name difficult to remember. Both conferences, EW and EPMCC, are similar in structure, scope of contents, members of the Steering and Programme Committees and audience, attending. Therefore, it had been agreed in 1999 to interleave these conferences on a bi-annual basis to have EW conferences on even years and EPMCC on odd years. Supporters of both conferences have been, besides VDE, SEE of France, AEI of Italy, OVE Austria, IEE of England, as well as the IEEE-Vehicular Technology Society.

The first event of the EPMCC was in November, 1995 in Bologna, Italy on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Guglielmo Marconi, followed by events in September 1997 in Bonn, Germany, March 1999 in Paris, France, February 2001 in Vienna, Austria, and April 2003 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In 2004 the Technical Programme Committees of both conferences decided to join EW and EPMCC and to continue under the unique brand "European Wireless". The sum total of events of both conferences was ten at that time. Accordingly, the 11th EW conference was scheduled for March 2005 in Nicosia, Cyprus. Since then, EW conferences continue counting events further on.
