Mobile WiMAX: Architecture, Protocol and Perspectives

Tutorial summary

The tutorial gives a comprehensive view of the IEEE 802.16 standard, with a focus on the MAC protocol, but also exploring the layers above (convergence sub-layer) and below (air interface). The reference flavor of IEEE 802.16 is that envisaged by the WiMAX Forum for use with mobile users. In addition to a brief introduction to the origins and a future perspective of IEEE 802.16, basic topics are included: MAC PDU construction, security, error recovery (ARQ and H-ARQ), and MAC support of the physical layer. Additionally, advanced topics, including quality of service support, multicast services, hand-over procedures and the power saving mechanisms, are covered. Finally, differences of the upcoming IEEE 802.16m and 3GPP LTE standards with respect to the current version of IEEE 802.16 are highlighted at both the MAC and physical layer throughout the talk, also including a case study on how the base station advertises the location and addressing of data in the forthcoming MAC frame.
